The PFFPNC newsletter for December 15–19 is now posted and highlights a major victory for the fire service with the signing of the Honoring Our Fallen Heroes (HONOR) Act into law on December 19. The bipartisan legislation officially recognizes occupational cancer as a line-of-duty death under the federal Public Safety Officers’ Benefits (PSOB) program, ensuring that firefighters’ families can access death and education benefits without having to prove a specific exposure caused the illness. Firefighter leaders, including IAFF General President Edward Kelly and PFFPNC President Scott Mullins, emphasized that the Act reflects decades of advocacy and aligns federal law with medical evidence showing cancer as the leading cause of firefighter line-of-duty deaths, providing long-overdue recognition and support for fallen firefighters and their families.
